The best Substack articles on military subjects I enjoyed in the past week
In A Strange Defeat, Aurelian lays out the factors that prevent so many Western leaders, both military and civilian, from making sense of the war in Ukraine. (Readers may wish to compare it to English-Speaking Pundits and the Russo-Ukrainian War.)
In The Apotheosis of Lord Nelson, Big Serge places Britain’s Greatest Ever Hero in the context of his time. (The second link will take you to the video version of The Rest is History.)
In Policy Makers’ Secret Weapon, Compass Points (an old friend from the days of the Quantico Renaissance) chronicles the decline of the crisis response capability of the US Marine Corps.
In Remastered, Ready, and Relevant, Mark McGrath offers access to a transcript of one of John Boyd’s famous presentations, The Conceptual Spiral.
In The Ultimate Reading List for Leaders, David Gran uncovers something interesting about senior American military leaders. When recommending books, former flag officers list heavily towards works, whether biographies or novels, that tell tales of the internal workings of one of the armed services of the United States. (The one exception to this rule is Alfred M. Gray, who recommends that leaders read - and, indeed, reread - several different translations of Sun Tzu’s Art of War.)
