The Tactical Notebook covers a lot of ground. Thus, readers who enjoy some of the pieces posted on its pages will find little of interest in other articles.
At the same time, the work of writing for this newsletter benefits greatly from ‘batch processing’. That is, switching from one topic to another requires so many changes to the cerebral ready rack that it is far easier to write a series of articles on the same subject than to spread an equal number of words over different topics.
The same dynamic governs the resumption of an older series. Before I am ready to add new posts, I need to revisit what I have already written, renew my acquaintance with the sources, and see if new facts of significance to these pieces have come to light. Thus, the eve of the revival of a series strikes me as a good time to put older pieces through a kind of ‘service-life extension program’.
With these things in mind, the promulgation of refurbished versions of older pieces will often herald the impending arrival of new pieces on similar subjects. Likewise, the dispatch of a fresh version of an aggregator suggests (but does not guarantee) that fresh ammunition of the relevant sort has been unboxed, fuzed, and stacked near the gun line.
