The Tactical Notebook devotes a great deal of attention to military matters of ages long past. One reason for this is the availability of information. Until a hundred years or so ago, the sorts of things that would now be locked away in a safe were freely discussed in a voluminous professional literature. Another is the quality of illustrations, whether the paintings of Georges Scott and Carl Röchling or the superbly detailed technical drawings of anonymous draftsmen.
Neither of these things, however, provides justification for the time, treasure, and trouble devoted to this undertaking. For that, I ask readers to consider the resemblance between the ideas, events, and, indeed, the equipment of the Edwardian Age and their counterparts at work in the ongoing war in Ukraine. In particular, I ask whether the picture at the top of this page shows a fortified position from 2022 or 1910.
