Clearly the French Army knew it had a huge problem with accuracy and had to do something fast, especially as the had few field howitzers in production at the time! I think it is worth pointing out this discussion addresses probable error in range, which is measured here in meters.

You are right on two counts.

In my eagerness to accommodate those who read by means of cell phones, I took "meters" off of the chart. (I have since added them to my text.)

Similarly, in pursuit of a literal translation of 'écart probable', I rendered it as 'probable error' rather than 'probable error in range' or 'range probable error'. (I have also corrected that mistake.)
