On Sunday, 13 May 1894, eighteen men - fourteen soldiers of the US Army and four civilians - assembled under a tree near Fort Keogh, Montana, in order to sing a hymn … in German. A note pasted on the photo that captured this event described the group as a ‘singing society’ [Sang-Verein]. Thus, it is likely that gatherings of this sort took place on a regular basis.
