This post provides a paraphrase of the author’s solution to the tactical decision game published in second issue of Deutsche Infanterie. If you haven’t done so already, please read (or, better yet, work through) the problem before looking at the solutions.
Decision
The First Battalion (I/55) attacks towards the southwest and takes Hill 53,4.
Rationale
It’s now 17:00. The sun will set at 17:42. Thus, with so little daylight remaining, you reject the (otherwise attractive) option of attacking to the west, thereby making it easier for other elements of your regiment to capture Stell Hill. Moreover, your evaluation of the general situation leads you to believe that, rather than fulfilling the regiment’s mission, such an attack would only lead to partial success.
You believe that the enemy commander has employed his reserve to conduct the counterattack against Infantry Regiment 105. Thus, he lacks the means to prevent your battalion from penetrating into the depth of his position. Moreover, if you capture the high ground around Hill 53,4, you will both fulfill the regiment’s mission and set the stage for further attacks towards the south.
The impending setting of the sun convinces you that your battalion will have to make an unstoppable advance. Likewise, consideration of the overall situation leads you to think that there is no need to defend your advance against a threat coming from the west. As you have no means of contacting any artillery unit, you decide against waiting for fire support.
