While the idea of common ammunition was replaced by common mountings (e.g. 155mm Howitzer M1 and 4.5 in Field Gun; 155mm Gun M1 and 8in Howitzer M1; 8in Gun M1 and 240mm Howitzer M1), it certainly made a huge amount of sense with respect to mass production. Provided you have the right production facilities, ammunition is much easier to mass produce than artillery systems.
