Interesting. If the purpose of the Ukrainian attacks is not apparent, there may be some occult purpose, or it may be that they are poorly managed and attacking haphazardly. Occam's razor suggests the latter. That is not good. The limiting factor for the Ukrainians is manpower, and using up troops to no discernible purpose would be the worst sort of military malpractice. I hope that the secret plan that causes the genius behind it all to become apparent one day ... actually exists.

War is the last resort of politics, so if there's an objective that makes no military sense, it is possible that it is a political move. The desire to show progress to sponsors or to quiet fears of a stalemate, perhaps - with those fears being realized after it became impossible to sustain the tempo required. That, or the attack was required of the army by said sponsor.

There is a lot of speculation possible here, a bottomless can of worms, so I will say this - it could just be a bad attack, but I think politics has trumped the army here. I remember Zaluzhny once saying that he did not rate an offensive's chances very highly.
