I always thought a modernized 75mm howitzer and M119 105mm howitzers would make more sense for Marine fire support; especially within MEUs. Lighter, more agility and mobility, easier logistics with less of a footprint, etc.
The 105mm "light gun" (kissing cousin to the M119) served the British well in the Falklands and the 75mm pack howitzer holds a place of honor in my heart. That said, I liked my Rick Lindsey's plan to rechamber the Soviet D-30 howitzer for US Navy 5-inch projectiles. (Speaking of Rick, he's just come out with a book about his time in Vietnam: https://www.dorrancepublishing.com/author-spotlight-forrest-r-lindsey-in-country-my-memories-of-vietnam-and-after/)
Pretty interesting!
