Milstack Saturday
30 May 2026

‘Milstack Saturday’ showcases the best articles on military subjects that I read in the preceding week. Please note that, while it awaits the publication of additional articles about tactical aspects of the war in the Persian Gulf, Milstack Special has gone into occlusion.
Etiènne Marcuz makes prophecies about the future of the NOSTRADAMUS over-the-horizon radar. (The acronym stands for NOuveau Système TRAnshorizon Décamétrique Appliquant les Méthodes Utilisées en Studio, which means ‘new over-the-horizon system with accuracy measured in tens of meters that uses methods that worked well in the lab’.)
Secretary of Defense Rock compares the missile-mashing portion of Operation Epic Fury to two previous attempts to bombard missile launching sites from the air: the attempt to knock out German Vergeltungswaffen in the last year of World War II and the Great SCUD Hunt of 1991. (The name of this family of long-range rockets, which consisted of the V-1 cruise missile and the V-2 ballistic missile, combined Vergeltung, which could be translated as ‘payback’, ‘retaliation’, or ‘revenge’, with Waffen, meaning ‘weapons’.)
Donald Hill crunches the numbers on Ukrainian use of long-range drones for strategic strikes and describes some cases of the use of smaller robots for tactical purposes. (In doing the latter, he showcases the work of the dronemeisters of the Khartia Corps, a formation descended from a unit that, early last year, I characterized as ‘the Kraken brigade for hipsters’.)
B.A. Friedman continues his splendid series about the roots, running-mates, and results of the Gallipoli operation of 1915. (When you have finished the article and its series-mates, take a look at the books that this remarkable Marine has written or edited.) (Good Reads)
Chris the Historian announces the start of a project to chronicle radar-guided B-24 crews that served in the China-Burma-India theater of the Second World War. (If you have any diaries, letters, documents or photos that might be of use to Chris, please send him a message.)

Portmanteaus should replace acronyms.
Although the French RAFALE, SPIRALE, NOSTRADAMUS are quite catchy, perhaps their innate talents should be respected.
