Milstack Saturday
15 November 2025
As a rule, Milstack Saturday showcases the best articles I read in the seven days prior to publication. This week, however, it shines a spotlight on complete newsletters that, if I am not to badly mistaken, will appeal to many readers of The Tactical Notebook.
If you like the decision games published by The Tactical Notebook, and, especially, Trading Places, you may enjoy Umpire LaFondiose. While the Schwerpunkt of this new newsletter lies squarely upon the tactical exercises crafted by Helmuth von Moltke it provides lots of other scenarios.
By the way, if you wish to take a deeper dive into the world of the problems posed by the ‘OG of the TDG’, you will find much of interest on the YouTube channel of the selfsame Umpire LaFondiose and, of course, the book that started it all, Moltke’s Tactical Problems.
If you wish to broaden your historical horizons, The Bazaar of War provides an excellent place to start. Written by a US Marine with a gift for fruitful comparison, this Substack employs tales drawn from many corners of the past two millennia to cast light on the problems, whether tactical or strategic, operational or organizational, faced by soldiers and statesmen of the present-day.
The Worthy House provides long-form reviews, in both print and audio, many of the books I wish I had time to read. These include monographs on the operational art of Francisco Franco, the life of General Cornwallis, the Finnish Civil War, and the long shadow cast by pistols fed by revolving chambers.
