The best of the things I read, listened to, or watched in the past week
In ‘From Battlefield to Pen’, Moose McGrath and Ponch Rivera (of The Whirl of Reorientation) interviews Austin Caroe (of The Distro). The discussion ranges widely, covering such topics as the command of platoons and companies to the Kriegspiel variant of chess. (Not to be confused with the many blocks-on-maps wargames of that name, the latter deprives each player of the ability to see his opponent’s pieces until an encounter occurs.) (I extend a hearty arigato gozaimasu to Donald Vandergriff for drawing my attention to this program.)
In ‘Lord Dunmore’s War’YT, Nicole Bialko, who vlogs as The Attic HistorianYT, provides the best treatment of the subject I have yet to encounter. So, whether you think that the conflict between Virginians and Shawnee on the banks of the Ohio represented the swan song of Colonial America or the morning nautical twilight of the American War of Independence, I recommend that you give this video series a serious shufti. (If you prefer reading to watching, I recommend The Shawnee and the Long KnivesAC.)
In ‘How France Lost ALL Its Military Bases in West Africa’YT, History LegendsYT does a deep dive into a story that has received far too little coverage in the Anglophone world. (For my own take on this tale, rendered in the style of Simon and Garfunkel, see Monsieur Macron’s Lament.)
