The best articles on military subjects I read in the past week
Most of the articles included in this list rolled off the presses (so to speak) in the past seven days. A few, however, may be older pieces that I discovered in the week that ends today.
Naval Doctrine III
‘the ability of the British and Americans to execute opposed amphibious assaults at scale in World War II was … the culmination of a centuries-long tradition’
The Battle of Lepanto
This was the last time that such a grand scene would unfold on the blue waters of the inner sea; afterwards the waters would more and more belong to sailing ships with broadside cannon.
The Mighty Matilda
… is the best ‘biography’ of a particular combat vehicle I have read in a very long time.
Normandy Turns Eighty
… and we have yet to learn some of the most important lessons of World War II
Eric Harden VC the Commando Medic
… combined courage, ingenuity, and judicious disobedience
The End of the Word Truth
… mentions neither Boyd nor Clausewitz. Nonetheless, it manages to be both … you guessed it … brilliantly Boydian and cunningly Clausewitzian
Signals Along a Transmission Line
… tells a tale that teaches valuable lessons in both physics and humility
Dear Captain Wormwood... III
“First and foremost, focus on fostering a culture of exclusivity.”

Discouraged at technical glitches in the Matilda article, but the Captain Wormwood post got me to subscribe to that substack.
