If the company was part of a division, then I would use https://www.hathitrust.org/ and https://archive.org/ to look for a division history. The same sources are also a good place to start a search for a company history. (NB: Division histories, which were often published commercially, are far more common than company histories.)
There are so many other places to look that I think that it' time to write an article on "how to find unit histories."
