While it resides on a platform that styles itself a home for newsletters, The Tactical Notebook aims to provide an experience closer to that of a high quality military history magazine. In particular, the models most often in my mind as I layout articles come from the golden age of MHQ.
With that in mind, while we take pains to make our articles as smart-phone friendly as possible, many of our offerings provide more value when enjoyed on larger screens. Among other things, these make it much easier to follow links to sources, locate complementary pieces, and make use of our many finding aids.
In much the same way, the bonuses we provide to readers who take out paid subscriptions differ greatly from the ‘free trial’ subscriptions offered by many other Substacks. That is, rather than transforming themselves into paid subscriptions, they remain free ‘for the duration’.
Thus, when a reader who takes out a paid subscription opts for membership in the Warfare Mastery Institute, a complimentary subscription to Extra Muros, or a gift subscription for a friend, none of those things will ‘auto-renew’ in a way that costs money.
At the same time, good manners (and Substack policy) forbid me from providing these benefits unless you ask for them. So, if they interest you, please send a short note to onfantry@gmail.com.
