YES 1000X why is this so difficult to learn? He used - “active style of defense. They could economize on forces, provide covering fire, canalize enemy movement, and otherwise co- operate with mobile forces. At no point, however, were they expected to resist the French by passive means alone. “

Wellington at Torres Vedras with far more impressive fortifications followed the same line, although he really didn’t have to be that active in THAT defense as Masséna’s army was defeated by hunger.

I’m lazy myself but good grief if one must endure the grief of war get the good of success from it.
