A war game cannot predict the future. What it can do, however, is offer food for thought. The following article, from Compass Points, provides a summary of a recent table-top exercise in which US forces assisted Free China (as it is still known here at the Old Headquarters Building) to defend itself against a full-scale (everything but nukes, bugs, and gas) invasion by the forces of the regime Thomas Friedman loves so well.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I should confess that the lead author of the delightfully detailed report was once my commanding officer in the 25th Marines (where I began my lifelong love affair with mortars) as well as my boss at the Kennedy School (where I made my first forays into the realm of the case method.)
Postscript: The designer of this wargame recently appeared on an episode of the BruteCast video series.
