Prior to the publication, in March of 1989, of the first edition of Warfighting, smart Marines kept their interest in things like military history under wraps. After the promulgation of the manual, even the most stupid of officers filled their workspaces with books and took pains to be seen reading.
For that reason alone, readers of the Tactical Notebook will benefit greatly from familiarity with this remarkable work. To that end, I have embedded a splendid précis, courtesy of Lieutenant Kayla Hass, USMC.
