Milstack Saturday
4 July 2026
This issue of ‘Milstack Saturday’ showcases the best articles on military subjects that I read in the week leading up to Independence Day 2026.
Compass Points provides a pocket history of Chowder II, an informal group of (mostly retired) Marines who, for the past seven years, have opposed official attempts to alter the order of battle of the US Marine Corps.
Mind of Things interviews an Estonian officer about, among many other things, the frequency with which Ukrainian units change their establishments.
GMan’s Chronicle begins a long-form essay on the ‘home-grown missile revolution’ taking place in Ukraine with a tale of the failure of Russia to gain air superiority during the invasion of 2022.
Strategic Frontiers lays out a smörgåsbord of observations about ‘strategic depth in the 21st century’. (In keeping with that metaphor, I recommend that readers make many trips to the table, but limit themselves to one small plate - by which I mean paragraph - per visit.)
The Chivalry Guild reviews The Unnecessary War.

You weren’t kidding when you mentioned that when digging into Strategic Frontiers article on Strategic Depth that one needed to pace themselves- one paragraph at a time. Saturday morning here in Texas and I’m waking slowly with a double espresso and what I thought would be introductory reading and I would save for later the deep dive. The first paragraph definitely disabused that idea- this is really a great find!! Thanx for the Saturday Milstack. They are always very inspiring and insightful! Definitely adds to one’s professional development and knowledge!!!
