Recently, while looking for something else, I ran into a set of diagrams, drawn in February of 1941, that described a ‘provisional war organization’ (vorläufig Kriegsgliederung) for the XXXVIII Army Corps. To be commanded by Erich von Manstein, converted into an amphibious force, and landed upon the shores of Great Britain, this formation displayed a number of unusual features. These included a high number of units mounted in bicycles, a cornucopia of fully motorized attachments, and the practice of splitting infantry divisions into two distinct echelons.
