19 January 1917
A frightful snow storm hit us over night. In the morning, we found our trenches full of wind-blown snow. The entrances to the shelters were completely blocked with snow, so that we had shovel ourselves out. Once again, we stood duty for twelve hours. We thought that we wouldn’t be able to stand this for much longer.
