In keeping with traditions dating back the very dawn of time, The Tactical Notebook will celebrate the birth month of the US Marine Corps with posts drawn from the rich and storied history of that service.
In particular, we will resume the serialization of Battalion, the monumental study of the structure of US infantry units written by Lieutenant Colonel John Sayen, USMCR. In particular, we will examine the organization of Marine infantry units between the end of the Second World War and the start (in earnest) of America’s long war in Vietnam.
We will also present two (or more) decision games with Marine Corps themes. One of these will make use of a personal experience monograph written by a Marine attending the US Army infantry school in the late 1940s. Another, called ‘December 1950’ will ask players to organize large-scale movement that included the famous ‘retreat from the Chosin Reservoir’.
