More seriously, the Infantry’s need for readily available and responsive fire support, both direct and indirect, has certainly lead down some strange pathways. The requirements to balance effective fires, mobility and resupply never ends, but it is clear that even little 60mm mortars can save the day (my thanks to Sean Naylor and his book, Not A Good Day To Die for making that point).
