This morning, while rummaging through the scratched and dented bin of the German Federal Archives, I ran into a proposal, dated 8 January 1945, for an ‘armored scout battalion’ (Panzerspäh Abteilung) in which most of the reconnoiterers rode in Italian armored cars.
